Looking Glass Quilts
This Generator creates images in the proper arrangement for the 3D screens made by the Looking Glass Factory. These devices use lenticular lenses to enable your eyes to see a single image from two different angles, creating a 3D effect.
This generator was created when I had the opportunity to experiment with the Looking Glass Go screen.
The main idea is to render dozens of views of a 3D scene and then assemble them together in a grid, called a quilt. Each rendered view is for a slightly different camera angle. For example:
These images are assembled into grid, like so:
The output images must have a specially formatted filename to inform the Looking Glass display of the image’s quilt configuration. The correct name of the above image is frame_0024_qs11x6a0.5625.png. The qs11x6a0.5625 portion identifies the number of columns (11), rows (6), and aspect ratio (0.5625) of the quilt.
Camera3D takes care of this part of the file naming for you.
For the Looking Glass Go, there are 66 camera angles of the same scene, each 372 pixels wide by 682 pixels high. The size of the composite image is therefore 4092x4092.
