Camera3D Looking Glass Renderer

Recently I had the opportunity to experiment with a Looking Glass Go display. The screen was kindly loaned to us by the Looking Glass Factory, the company that makes the device. Marina and I were considering using these for a future art project.

These screens can be used to display realtime or pre-recorded content. The most expedient way for me to explore what these can do was to create a new Camera3D generator to produce images in the correct format for these screens.

To create pre-recorded content for these screens you must render 66 views of a scene, each with a slightly different camera angle. These views are then arranged into a 11 by 6 grid called a Quilt.

The device is built with a lenticular lens that allows each eye to see a single image from two different angles, creating a 3D effect.

The Looking Glass Factory also makes other larger displays, each with different specifications for constructing the Quilt. Visit their website to learn more!

If you are lucky enough to get access to one of these screens and you are fan of Processing, give Camera-3D and its new Looking Glass Quilt generator a try.
