About Me

James Schmitz is a visual artist and creative technologist based in the Lower Hudson Valley, New York. He explores the expressive intersections of art, data, and science, driven by a vision to create novel tools for artistic expression and utilize them in his art practice.

His generative and animated visual artworks, often created in collaboration with artist Marina Zurkow, are currently exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art. These works engage deeply with historical and ecological themes, highlighting environmental issues. Their collaborations have also been showcased at bitforms gallery and include commissioned work for Google.

James holds a master's degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, and served as a Research Resident at ITP from August 2019 to August 2020. Prior to pursuing his artistic career, James earned a master's degree in Mathematics from NYU Courant and worked for over a decade as a quantitative researcher in the finance industry. Drawing upon extensive experience in computer programming and data analysis, James integrates his technical background with his artistic pursuits.

He is the author of the Python Processing framework py5, demonstrating his commitment to building and sharing tools within the creative community.
